Courtyards
As tourism increased in Southern California, the bungalow, a determinedly individual house in its own little garden, spurred the bungalow court, a group of individual houses placed around a shared central garden. The apartments were attached to each other, but, as in the bungalow court, each one expressed its own personality and enjoyed substantial privacy. Courtyard complexes became popular because they provided a community within a community.
